What is stewardship? A steward is one who manages another's property, finances, or other affairs. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 says, "Everything in the Heavens and earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as being in control of everything. Riches and honor come from you alone, and you are the Ruler of all mankind; your hand controls power and might, and it is at your discretion that men are made great and given strength". Stewardship means we are to manage what belongs to God, what He has graciously allowed us to make use of. But, after we pay our tithes, the other 90% is ours to do as we please, right? Wrong? "Especially you have transferred everything to God. In reality, what it means is that God expects good stewardship on only 90 percent of what he owns. The other 10 percent has already been committed and given, so the stewardship does not have to worry about it. In essence, the wise stewardship's responsibilities are reduced by 10 percent once the Lord's tithe has been committed. God owns the other 90 percent just like He owns the first 10 percent. It's just that He allows us to use the 90 percent for our own living expenses, in keeping with what is pleasing to Him." The faithful steward enjoys four benefits.

questions about
GIVING and TITHING

More intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ. Remember what the master said to the slave who had been faithful in discharging his financial responsibilities: "Enter into the joy of your master." Matthew 25:21.

The development of character. God uses money to refine our character. Scripture regards money as an index to a person's true character. All through scripture, there is an intimate correlation between the development of a person's character and how he or she handles money.

Learning to be content. In the area finances, God has his part and we have our part. Once we know God's part and know and faithfully do our part, we can be content. "Moreover, it is required in stewards that a man can be found faithful." 1 Corinthians 4:2.

Having our finances in order. As we apply the principles of God's economy to our finances, we will begin to get out of debt, spend more wisely, start saving for our future goals and give more to the work of Christ. Crown Ministries.
